When you’re trying to do something hard, what your brain does is give you something else hard to do that’s not quite as hard so you can feel justified in not doing the thing you’re supposed to because you’re doing something else useful. And if you give in to that impulse, and you win, then it gives a little dopamine kick and it grows stronger.
As I watched Jordan Peterson say this, I immediately paused the video because I felt something wasn't right.
And it occured to me - watching Jordan Peterson is the thing that's not quite as hard as the thing I'm supposed to be doing.
Let's face it - Jordan Peterson is literally intellectual cocaine.
Watching him talk gives you "aha!" dopamine hits that make you feel like you're advancing in all kinds of directions. Which is wonderful and inspiring, but it's also a total waste if it is not embodied material reality.
-->And I looked around my room and thought, "How can I call myself a fan of this guy when I don't actually do anything he says?"
